What is Occupational Therapy?
Pediatric occupational therapy is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on helping children develop the skills necessary for daily living and participation in various activities. Occupational therapists work with children who may have physical, developmental, sensory, or emotional challenges, utilizing play-based and individualized strategies to improve their ability to perform tasks at home, school, and in the community. The goal is to enhance a child’s independence and overall quality of life by addressing specific functional needs, promoting engagement in meaningful activities, and fostering positive developmental outcomes.
Services offered

Evaluation
A formal evaluation to assess your child’s areas of strength and challenges with same aged peers. Each evaluation will include a review of your child’s medical history, a parent interview, observations through play and informal activities. If indicated, a variety of formal assessments may be utilized depending upon the child’s needs.
Following each evaluation, a write up will be provided with a treatment plan if services are warranted. Furthermore, a scheduled phone call or zoom call will be provided to discuss the findings and any questions you may have.

Treatment Sessions
Treatment sessions will occur 1-2x/week in the environment most fitting for each family and child (home, community, school if possible, etc.). Aiming to address your child’s variety of needs, each session will utilize and individualized and holistic approach.
Families are encouraged to be present and hands on in treatment sessions. This will increase understanding and knowledge of how your child’s needs are being addressed and ways to incorporate activities into their daily routines.

Feeding Therapy
Feeding therapy is a unique and specialized intervention which Occupational Therapy utilizes which aims to help individuals develop or improve their feeding skills. This therapy can be particularly beneficial for children who have difficulties with eating and/or drinking.
Each session will encompass a variety of therapeutic techniques to address identified challenges. Some challenges associated with feeding difficulties include, sensory difficulties, oral motor challenges, and anxiety. Parents will also be provided with education and strategies to continue to increase your child’s success at home.
Overall, feeding therapy aims to help individuals become more comfortable and independent with eating and drinking, to ultimately improve their nutritional intake and quality of life.
